I only recommend this game if you intend to play 1212AD or another total conversion mod. The base game is a worse version of Rome II.

I've been playing Total War for 15 years. I was so excited to play Rome I and the Alexander and Barbarian Invasion campaigns. Attila is the barbarian invasion campaign from 15 years ago and has remained one of my favorite Total War titles of all time (and there are a LOT of good ones). Attila at times is annoying with fighting battle after battle of the same faction, but the absolute historical scale I feel when playing this game is unmatched. 5/5 if you love a challenge.

So close to being an extremely fun game that offers a deep gameplay experience in my favorite period of history. What it is instead is an opaque and buggy game that was abandoned shortly after development with glaring issues that modders had to try and fix. The mechanics are obtuse and badly explained, leading to me feeling frustrated every single time I try to pick this game up again for the past 10 years
