The game is still active, and your lobby will be full in about 5 minutes. At the start and on high difficulties, the game gets kind of hard to play, so I recommend buying it with your friends.

They basically ended support for this game by ending the storyline. Kinda ♥♥♥♥♥♥ since I paid money for basically a couple of runs and a cutscene. Steam needs to take this off the store or AH needs to allow replayability. It's a different game from HD2 and should be reinstated as it were.

Great game, currently unplayable due to Dev intervention via warfront system or perhaps heavy modding.
