FM27 – 2D Match Engine, In-Game Editor & QoL - FAQs
Q: Across these topics for FM27, what were the main goals, changes and additions that the Sports Interactive team looked to address?
A: Combining community feedback and internal reviews, our key goals in these areas of FM27 were:
Implement changes to the 2D match engine that both evolve this view and reintroduce familiar elements
Further improve the In-Game Editor with a focus on making the tool more of a full-screen experience
Bring granular changes to the delivery of news and information in messages that support FM27’s focus on user interface improvements
Encourage further immersion and believability in every save via various improvements, including millions of database and competition updates, deeper statistics in the Data Hub, more actionable advice from your backroom, further match day details and more
Q: Has the classic 2D match engine view received any improvements for FM27?
A: Yes. As you watch a match unfold you now have greater detail and visual cues to track the match, which incorporates community feedback. This includes making the ball and player discs smaller, allowing for both to be a more realistic fit within the 2D pitch. Changes to shadows and net transparency, alongside more minor tweaks, create a familiar design that allow you to easily follow the action.
Q: What improvements can be expected for the In-Game Editor for FM27?
A: Aligning with the advances made in FM27’s user interface and navigation, the In-Game Editor has undergone design changes, influenced by community feedback and our internal reviews, to make it more intuitive to use. With a focus on data presentation, the In-Game Editor is more of a full-screen experience, spotlighting the most common areas to interact with. To further help with navigation, check the signifiers for your default active tab, plus the tooltips on editable fields.
This, alongside a general uplift in performance and smoothness, help users of the Editor make quick changes that can transform an FM27 save.
Q: Are there additional changes to overall flow and delivery of information in FM27?
A: Yes. Along with the key changes covered in the previous user interface deep dive, changes to the delivery of messages make the information you receive clearer and more helpful. Adjustments include the reports on your own performance from the board and supporters; the annual NXGN 50 news item being visible in the message body instead of needing to click to the article; and loan reports giving deeper information at a glance. Additionally, scouting updates can be viewed in multiple formats, each with a clear list of players and ratings.
Fitness test messages house all player tests and outcomes in one table. Similarly, if a player receives a concussion, a trackable protocol is in place in the Medical centre, with players requiring clearance from a neurologist to be available for selection.
Connected to the Training and Tactical Effectiveness upgrades, inbox items for many aspects of match preparation are also adjusted. Match preparation types can be set for every session ahead of a match directly from the message; and the training schedule for the week can be edited within its relevant message. Returning elements to further support this are within the regular training breakdowns, where you can quickly give individual feedback to players, alongside a clear breakdown of team performance.
Q: How has staff advice been addressed in FM27?
A: Changes to what advice you receive, and how, from your backroom staff aim to provide more actionable advice, more often, to consider in your key decisions. When looking to recruit players, there will be deeper suggestions in your recruitment focuses and transfer negotiation. This includes further consideration around a player’s Out Of Possession role abilities in scouting reports, to assess if they match your tactical philosophy. Within the transfer negotiation process, your Director of Football offers further advice around fees and payment structures for transfers and loans.
Advice during a match will include information aimed at helping you choose when to deploy a Tactical Tweak, while between matches, suggested actions from staff meetings are all presented in a single message, with options to implement them collectively or individually.
Q: What other changes and improvements will be noticeable when playing FM27?
A: Status flags for players have been given more depth and detail, with three flags visible once again when you hover over them, and four additional flags added; player is taking leadership training, a coaching course, a language course, or is available for the youth of reserve team. All these flags are visible if you are unemployed, alongside the ability to view the player database and create a shortlist when you’re not managing a club.
Interactions with players and other managers have been addressed in multiple ways, including managers of parent clubs for loanees having slightly more leniency when considering recalling a loanee; detail on why players won’t speak to an unhappy teammate, and being able to congratulate a player for winning multiple awards.
Screens to show your club’s Best XI, both for the past season and in your history with the team, are once again available. Over on the Captains screen, it’s easier to arrange your Captain list with drag-and-drop functionality. Across these screens and more, you’ll see more visual variety thanks to branded backgrounds and relevant colour schemes, including 19 partners with officially branded screens.
Q: What other changes have been made to align FM27 with real-world leagues, competitions and rules?
Fixture scheduling improvements and fixes and implemented across competitions to align with their real laws and formats, including the draw system for the UEFA Champions League. Also factored in is avoidance of English clubs in the same city both playing at home on the same day, and in the German Bundesliga, arranging broadcasted games to adhere to the rules around matches selected for TV.
As part of more than 18 million database changes and 1,500 competition updates, new competitions are added across the globe including in Chile and Peru. This comes alongside restructures of leagues and cups to match updated real-life formats, both nationally and internationally, with additional new licenses
Q: Are there more granular improvements to share within the match day experience?
A: Yes. Player gesture additions include behaviour around free-kicks and interactions with the referee when decisions go for or against them, including surrounding teammates. For the touchline officials you’ll notice more realistic flag movements thanks to a new physics system for them. During a match you may hear drums being played by supporters, if the corresponding real-life club’s supporters are known to do this. After a match, playback of the game is now possible as soon as you leave a match and features new speed settings.
Q: What additional data is available to analyse in FM27?
A: The Data Hub will drive additional messages to your Inbox with statistics to help you prepare for matches, including extra detail in drop-down menus. More specific figures are available on eight different data points, including around dribbles, xG, non-penalty xG and xA, while for passing, match data will display passes across three categories (Short, Medium, Long), each with a total number and success rate percentage.
Q: Are the gameplay images shown in the supporting blog post representative of what will be in FM27 on launch?
A: The gameplay shown is from a development build of the game, meaning it is subject to change before release. Additional work will be focused on further visual optimisation and incorporating feedback from recent user testing. This build contains information that is still under approval process by right holders and may contain data that does not, at this time, accurately reflect real world data.

A: Yes. The Sports Interactive team are preparing a first FM27 livestream, where the community can see many of the game’s new features and improvements in action. Look out for further details across official FM channels.
